Chiropractic Therapy Deals With Frozen Shoulder Syndrome

by Administrator 14. June 2010 15:42

According to the J Manipulative Physiological Therapy Journal, the treatment of frozen shoulder syndrome is possible through conservative chiropractic care. By using the right therapy to the shoulder through low force, specific contact adjustment procedures, significant pain relief has been experienced.

Under the published case study, the patient was a 53-year old woman who was suffering from severe pain in the shoulder for more than 6 months. She had been diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis and gone through various kinds of treatments without successful results or relief. This included several NSAIDs, physical therapy and analgesics.

When the patient visited a chiropractor, her condition had become serious and progressed to almost total immobility of the shoulder joint. In addition, there was severe pain and noticeable restriction in performing normal activities of daily life. In short, there was urgent need for corrective measures to reduce the stiffness in her shoulder and enable her recovery.

Once the chiropractor examined the female patient and observed all reports of previous treatments, her shoulder was managed with conservative measures. The affected shoulder joint and the cervicothoracic spine were adjusted by the chiropractor. During therapy, mechanical force as well as manual short lever chiropractic adjustments was used. The Activator Adjusting Instrument assisted in the chiropractic procedure.

After few visits and chiropractic treatments, the patient experienced considerable relief in her shoulder and reported lesser frozen shoulder symptoms. This indicated that chiropractic care can be effective as a therapy for difficult cases like this. Specifically, low force instrumental adjustments can prove to be more beneficial than high force manipulations or movements.

Overcoming Cervical Injury Trauma With Chiropractic Care

by Administrator 7. June 2010 17:08

A case study reported by Arn Strasser, a chiropractor at the Strasser Chiropractic Center in Portland indicates the possible use of chiropractic treatment in providing relief from cervical injury trauma.
The patient, who was a basketball player, felt a wrenching pain in his neck during a game. He was very sore and stiff during his first visit to the chiropractor and complained of burning muscle pain. Initially, cold packs were applied to the injury along with over-the-counter analgesic.

Even though his pain reduced, the patient continued to experience stiffness and neck aches. In view of his condition and ultrasound reports, the chiropractor did resistance-type maneuvers to the neck and put pressure to trigger points along with stretching. This is known as muscle energy therapy.

On the next visit, the patient reported stiffness but no burning pain in his neck. Consequently, the chiropractor palpated the spine and observed lesser vertebral motion resistance, tenderness to pressure and better overall motion. A cervical adjustment was also explained and implemented to the patient.

Lying on his back, the patient’s motor unit was isolated with lateral flexion. Resistance was provided to the tissue along with a gentle thrust into the neck. The patient experienced an instant release of tension after this adjustment. On the other hand, the chiropractor reported increased motion in the joint.

Over a period of two weeks, further adjustments were made to the patient’s neck and upper back. He was also recommended with neck exercises. Within a month, he resumed normal activity and his neck was free from pain. In short, chiropractic therapy helped the patient in having his neck treated and returning to playing. It readjusted the disturbed spinal workings due to the injury and prevented further degeneration or chronic neck pain.

Chiropractic Therapy For Relief From Neck Pain - Case Study

by Administrator 31. May 2010 11:36

The Tamworth Chiropractic Clinic reported a case regarding a 33-year old female who gained relief from chronic neck pain with the help of chiropractic care. Previously, she had been suffering from pain in her right arm and neck, with tightness in arm rotation.

Upon examination, she reported about a bad fall affecting her right shoulder about 16 years ago. This led to shoulder pain but gradually extended to her neck and left arm. When she first visited a chiropractic therapist, the patient was complaining of constant headaches. Before getting recommended for Chiropractic treatment, she had already seen a Physiotherapist and an Osteopath along with consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by her physician.

Thorough examination of the patient was done by Chiropractic expert, including pulse, sensation, muscle and reflex tests as well as blood pressure level monitoring. Apart from restricted movement in her neck and right shoulder, all other tests gave normal results. Chiropractor observed irregularity in moving some of the spinal joints. Further tests revealed irritation in the neck and arm, medically known as Chronic Traumatic Cervical Facet Irritation.

Once the diagnosis was confirmed, treatment including chiropractic manipulation was administered to her spine. Within 24 hours of the first session, the female reported of no headache and reduction in her symptoms. After several chiropractic care sessions, she experienced remarkable improvements. From ten visits for treatment, the patient got rid of 90% of her symptoms.

Her chiropractor advised the female to return for treatment if the symptoms became severe again. Since these had been prevalent for more than 16 years, it was likely for them to resurface again. In short, chiropractic therapy enabled her to gain considerable relief from stiffness and pain in the neck and shoulder.

Treating Primary Dysmenorrhea With Chiropractic Care

by Administrator 25. May 2010 09:56

Recently, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has reported a case regarding the effectiveness of chiropractic therapy in treating primary Dysmenorrhea. The objective was to collect data about the drop table method, a specific Chiropractic technique.

Over a period of four weeks, the symptoms of primary Dysmenorrheal and motion restrictions of the lumbosacral spine were noted in sixteen females. Out of these, thirteen subjects were enrolled for the case study. Drop table manipulations were used thrice during each of the two menstrual cycles for treating bilateral and unilateral lumbosacral flexion and restrictions in access.

Before starting with chiropractic treatment, the females reported menstrual pain and symptoms of primary Dysmenorrheal using the Numeric Pain Scale. These ratings were utilized as primary measures for determining the outcome of the case study. With an average age of 26 years, most patients reported symptoms with duration of about 12 years.

During the initial visits, all subjects reported high level of pain in two or three anatomical sites, including lower or general abdominal pain and lower back pain. Gradual changes were witnessed by all patients as chiropractic treatment was provided. The abdominal pain and lower back pain was largely reduced while the lower abdominal pain declined according to nature of cycle.

This case study pointed out that chiropractic care can have a significant positive impact in providing relief from menstrual pain related to primary Dysmenorrhea. It can be greatly relieved by using drop table technique to treat motion segment restrictions of the lumbosacral spine.

Chiropractic Therapy For Erb’s Palsy

by Administrator 17. May 2010 12:31

According to the Clinical Chiropractic Journal, 2008, patients with different pediatric conditions have been treated through the use of chiropractic therapy. It has also been successfully used for gaining respite from Erb’s Palsy, as indicated by the following case report.

An eight year girl was diagnosed with Erb’s Palsy. Her right arm had the deformity known as ‘waiter’s tip’. In spite of long term medical care, the patient continued to suffer from restricted motion range in the right upper extremity in the related joints. Also the muscles were not flexible as they should normally be. These problems led to negative effects on her interpersonal relations with school mates as well as other people.

When the patient was referred for chiropractic therapy, she was still suffering from the severe symptoms of Erb’s Palsy. During the initial visits, site-specific care was provided to her. In addition, girl received low amplitude, high velocity chiropractic adjustments to vertebral and extra vertebral subluxations. Also, the right upper extremity was cared for with myofascial release.

After three months of chiropractic care, the patient experienced better bilateral symmetry and muscle toning. Following these improvements, she was able to normalize activities and participate in sporting events as well, such as rock climbing. Such positive results indicated the success of chiropractic therapy in treating patients with obstetric palsy.

Chiropractic Help For Successful Pregnancy After Repeated Miscarriages

by Administrator 10. May 2010 06:07

In a recent report published by the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, a case described the role of chiropractic care in helping a woman suffering from infertility and miscarriage.

A 27-year old woman had previously gone through two miscarriages and experienced anovulatory cycle for nine months. Before choosing to go for chiropractic therapy, she had undergone medical treatment for ulcerative colitis and infertility. Along with this, the female followed a restrictive diet. The reports also show that she had been taking birth control pills for 7 years before trying to get pregnant.

When she visited a chiropractor, the patient wanted to improve her health and get successfully pregnant. During Torque Release Technique (TRT) examination, vertebral subluxations were detected. The Integrator instrument was used to make adjustments. Initially, her visits were limited to twice a week for 30 days and then, one visit per week for the next 30 days.

Additional therapies used along with chiropractic care included stretching, audio tapes, relaxation exercises and craniosacral therapy. After 60 days, the patient witnessed improvement in her health and a normal ovulatory cycle. She became pregnant after her second cycle.

On the whole, the woman responded in a positive manner to the chiropractic care. In contrast to infertility treatment taken before, she did not undergo any stress or negative reproductive effects. The safe and non-invasive approach proved to be highly effective for successful pregnancy.

Chiropractic Management For Relieving Shoulder Instability

by Administrator 27. April 2010 07:49

The Journal of Manipulative Physiotherapy published a report in support with Los Angeles College of Chiropractic regarding the use of chiropractic therapy for treating shoulder instability in professional hockey athletes.

A professional hockey player aged 23 years was suffering from recurrent pain and instability in the left shoulder. Previously, he had undergone two shoulder operations to correct the problem but both surgeries didn't do much good. During the time of his initial visit to a Chiropractor, the patient was still playing professional hockey and was looking for an alternative to surgery.

Chiropractor observed that the patient had taken strength training for rehabilitation after his shoulder surgeries. Further testing and reports showed that he had a very strong rotator cuff and scapular musculature with a weaker response in left shoulder than the right one.

In view of the findings, chiropractic treatment involving the use of proprioceptive training, joint function improvement and mobilization of soft tissue was undertaken. Gradually, the symptoms of recurrent shoulder pain and instability reduced. The chiropractic therapy also included techniques to prevent joint injury and avoid further damage to already unstable or injured joints.

Eventually, the patient gained from a decreased number of shoulder instability incidences incomparison to the time before chiropractic treatment was initiated. As a result of chiropractic therapy the symptoms were also reduced drastically during the hockey season. Patient was able to play the entire season and carry on with the conservative therapy approach.

To summarize, this case signified the potential advantages of using chiropractic therapy and proprioceptive exercises to gain relief from recurrent shoulder instability. Such treatment can be tried by patients who have already had or are going to have surgery.

Chiropractic Therapy For Cervical Problems

by Administrator 20. April 2010 07:54

In a recent study, a 54-year old patient was recommended for chiropractic therapy for upper extremity pain and cervical disc surgery consideration. He was suffering from excessive pain in the right should, right proximal medial humeral, right ulnar groove and anterior forearm. The pain was severe enough to cause disruptions in daily life activities.

When examined by the chiropractor, it was found that the patient has no tenderness to the cervical musculature but there was impact on the forearm flexors. There were no signs of dural tension while pain was felt on the cervical spine extension. It was observed that a combination of disc bulge, facet hypertrophy and flaval ligament thickening leads to central spinal stenosis. With time, this may lead to degeneration of discs.

In the case of this patient, there was a posterior problem called ‘protrusion’ and it affected the longitudinal ligament. There was no non-contained extrusion and hence, the problem did not require any surgical correction. In view of the patient’s experience and MRI test reports, the doctors recommended chiropractic care as the optimal treatment for his cervical problem.

After several sessions, the patient is in better condition and still undergoing chiropractic care. His chances of having hemiangioma related to the cervical stenosis have also been minimized. Till date, the patient has lost 15 pounds, started with a weight training and walking regime and reported 70 percent freedom from pain. Chiropractic therapy has yielded good results in his case.

Chiropractic Therapy For Ear Infections

by Administrator 12. April 2010 11:47

In the United States, ear infections are a very common ailment faced by the people, especially children. Apart from common cold, three out of four children will complain of having an ear infection before they turn three years old.

Many times, parents give antibiotics to their children for relieving ear pain. However, recent studies have led doctors to believe that overuse of antibiotics can prove to be harmful for the child’s health. In fact, many doctors are recommending parents to allow the infection to go away on its own rather than starting immediate treatment.

As an aid to the wait and watch approach, parents have also started taking their kids for Chiropractic therapy. One such parent, Susan Lekborg, tried traditional treatments for her son, Cooper, who suffered from chronic ear infections. When antibiotics did not work for improving his condition, she went to a chiropractor.

Initially, she felt skeptical and anxious about taking her child for Chiropractic therapy. However, she was relieved when Cooper started feeling better after the first session only. His Chiropractic doctor adjusted the child’s spine to avoid building up of fluid in his ears and opening of ear canals for infection drainage.

While some doctors hold Chiropractic therapy in great regard, others are still not convinced about its benefits and effectiveness. Still, the benign nature of this therapy is very helpful in treating patients without hurting their body. For Susan Lekborg and her son, Cooper, Chiropractic therapy led to positive results and healthier, antibiotic-free life.
